THE PIONEERS OF CYCLING

Our inspiration for starting our company and products came from the pioneers of cycling, such as Chris Kalkman.

On this page we share anecdotes, stories and images of these pioneers. History repeats itself, let's learn from the past.

Chris Kalkman

Chris (Christiaan) Kalkman was born in 1887 in Nieuwesluis (Heenvliet) and died in 1950 in Poortugaal. Chris had a very successful amateur and professional cycling career. He was nicknamed 'the dinosaur'. In 1909 he became champion on the road and won the Tour of the Netherlands. In 1914 he became champion of South Holland, and won the road championship for the second time. Chris was now a professional cyclist and would continue to do so until 1918. After that Chris founded the car garage 'De Maas' in Rotterdam, with among other things car rental (taxis).

1909 - Tour through the Netherlands

In 1909 the first Tour through the Netherlands was held. ASC Olympia organised this three-day tour. On country roads, with a rest day after the second stage. Today we call this gravel. Chris Kalkman (21) was the eventual winner. In the same year he also won the championship on the road from Nijmegen to Mook (100km in 3 hours). In 1914 the Tour was held in Belgium, because the Dutch government had not given approval for a championship on the road. Chris wins for the second time.

Finish sports field Birkhoven in Amersfoort.

The start was from the Rembrandtplein in Amsterdam. The award ceremony was in De Kroon. The finish was in Amersfoort. They rode average speeds of 28 km/h. On country roads with simple racing bikes, often of the Rover brand. Several bicycle brands eventually became car brands. There are also well-known car clubs that originated from cycling.

Performance nutrition

Of the 26 participants, 15 men finished. The first stage was ridden by Chris in 10 hours 42 minutes. There was also a classic Amsterdam-Utrecht in 1909, they rode 80km in 2 hours @37 on average. Highways, simple single speed bicycles, without brakes. Food and drink was simple, sometimes some wine (low alcohol % in those years!), water, musette and bands around your neck and go. Chris loved apple syrup we know, perhaps that was his magic potion? We know that in Antiquity and the Middle Ages people liked to eat dried dates, figs, apricots and nuts as part of their sports diet. Galen of Pergamon was a Greek physician who knew a lot about this. Now the sports nutrition industry has switched to laboratory nutrition. Ask yourself if this is really better for your body.

Image Description

Good energy

Chris' son, Hans Kalkman, used to play with his father's medals as a little boy. Fortunately, there are still some left. They hang proudly on the wall.

We get our inspiration from the fact that Chris and all the other pioneers of this beautiful sport achieved their achievements with the simple things they had at hand. So did their nutrition. In our 'modern' world we fight for more natural food and drink. No junk like maltodextrin and other fillers. Your stomach can't handle it, you get pain and more... We want you to enjoy your sport, not suffer because of the nutrition. Sports with the power of nature. Enjoy it.
